There are a few proven ways to effectively choose keywords for use on your website or blog. Here is an easy to follow process on how to find your keywords.

Write a List

The first step to choose keywords for an organic SEO campaign is to first write down a list of initial keywords that are related to your business as well as your industry. The point of this initial list is to provide a starting point. One way you can gather these initial keywords is by doing a quick run through of your website and see which words it focuses on the most.

Choose Keywords Based on your Competition

Another way to gather some keywords is to see which words are being used by your competitors. By entering one of your keywords into a search engine you’ll see the top sites that rank for that specific keyword. You are aiming to choose keywords that will be used frequently by your target customer but also don’t have many competing pages. You’ll have a better conversion rate this way. Look through these top website results and see which words they are focusing on that enabled them to be in the position they are for that specific keyword. Repeat this for all of your general keywords.

Check its Competitiveness

After you gather that initial list of keywords and phrases you are going to want to figure out how competitive each word or phrase is. There are many tools that can help you achieve this such as Wordtacker, Keyword Discovery, or Google Adwords Keyword Tool. The purpose of these tools is to give you a list of similar keywords based on your initial keyword you want to focus on. It will also show you how competitive a keyword is. You want to aim for a high KEI (keyword effectiveness index). This means that the keyword is popular with searches but also doesn’t have a lot of competition from other websites. The higher the KEI, the more effective the keywords will be.

Find Matches

You’ll then want to decide which of the alternative keywords you find matches your business goal the most. For this, you’ll want to think like your customers. Would they type it into a search engine? If yes, then you should use it. You’ll also want to identify if your website has substantial content that backs up the phrases you are wanting to focus on. If you’re trying to focus on a keyword but don’t have any content on your site related to it you shouldn’t focus on it until you create some content to back it up. By doing this you’ll whittle your way down to a more focused keyword list.

Implement Keywords

After you do all of the above for each general keyword, and you have your finished list you can start to implement the keywords into your website. Focus on these keywords and makes sure your content and tags are supporting them. Having focused and popular keywords with little competition, as well as having sufficient content about each keyword will help move your website up the ranks of search results and stay there.
