Do URL Shorteners Hurt SEO?

The use of social media has resulted in a dramatically increased use of URL shorteners. If you aren’t aware of what a URL shortener does head here – https://goo.gl/BmnO6H (hint, that is an example of a URL shortened link). These shorter URL’s are useful for a number reasons. Not only do they look aesthetically appealing as opposed to something that looks like this (https://www.hashtags.org/platforms/twitter/what-is-a-url-shortener-and-what-does-it-do/) but they are useful for social media because you need every single inch of the limited amount of space the social media channels give you to relay your message, and having super long URL’s reduces your space and increases your text.

But, from an SEO perspective, do these URL shorteners harm your SEO efforts? After all, link building is an important part of Search Engine Optimization. Well, you’ll be glad to hear that using URL shorteners has absolutely no negative impact on SEO. This according to Google’s Matt Cutts.

How URL Shorteners Affect Social Tags

Social networks almost always have a “NoFollow” tag in the links they provide and it is standard practice to stop abuse where a link from Facebook would count towards a website PageRank and in turn would artificially inflate its authority. URL shorteners however have 301 redirects which would mean the search engines follow those links back. Bottom line, this is great news if you are already using Facebook or Twitter as part of your marketing efforts and post content that leads to your website.

URL Shorteners You Should Be Using

So, with that being said, you may want to consider starting to use URL shorteners as they have really become the standard way to share URL’s across social media. If you aren’t sure which ones to use, here are some of the more popular choices.
